Vienna is one of those cities that feels different every season.
In winter, it smells like mulled wine and roasted chestnuts. In summer, locals cool off by the Alte Donau. Spring brings blossoms and green parks, while autumn turns the vineyards around Vienna golden.
I regularly commute to Vienna from St. Pölten, so I see the city in all seasons. And one thing I’ve learned is this: there isn’t just one best time to visit Vienna. It depends on what kind of trip you want.
If you’re planning your first visit, this guide will help you decide when to go based on weather, crowds, hotel prices and experiences.
TL;DR – When Is the Best Time to Visit Vienna?
If you just want the quick answer:
- Best overall balance: May and September
- Best for Christmas markets: Late November to December
- Cheapest time to visit Vienna: January and February
- Best weather: Late spring and early autumn
- Fewest crowds: Late autumn and winter (excluding Christmas)
- Warmest months: July and August
Personally, spring and autumn are the ideal times to be in Vienna. The colours are beautiful, the weather is mild, and you avoid the extremes of heat and cold.

Winter in Vienna (December to February)
Winter in Vienna is atmospheric, festive and, at times, surprisingly cold.
December: Christmas Markets & Festive Magic
If your dream is to visit the famous Christmas markets, December is the best time to go to Vienna.
Rathausplatz transforms into a festive village with food stalls, mulled wine and Christmas decorations. Schönbrunn Palace hosts one of the most beautiful markets in the city, and wandering through the Upper Belvedere by night feels magical.
The Vienna Christmas market season typically runs from mid to late November until Christmas. Some markets stay open through New Year’s Eve.
Expect:
- Chilly temperatures
- Busy evenings
- Higher hotel prices
- Popular attractions are filling up quickly
It is one of the most popular times to visit Vienna, so book accommodation early.
January and February: The Quietest Months
After Christmas and New Year’s, Vienna becomes calmer.
January and February are typically the cheapest times to visit Vienna in terms of hotel prices. You’ll encounter fewer tourists and shorter queues at top attractions like the Spanish Riding School or Schönbrunn Palace.
The weather in Vienna during these months can be cold and grey. Chilly temperatures often hover just above freezing. This year, it has even snowed quite heavily in February, which is actually unusual. Late autumn and winter fog can also linger, especially in January.
But winter in Vienna has its charm:
- Cosy coffee houses
- Art exhibitions
- Concert seasons in full swing
- Ice skating rinks
If you don’t mind chilly weather, it can still be an excellent time to visit.
Spring in Vienna (March to May)
Spring is when Vienna starts to breathe again.
March and April: Emerging Green Spaces
March weather in Vienna can still be unpredictable. You might get mild weather or lingering cold days. Vienna’s weather in April is more stable but still mixed.
What makes spring special is seeing the parks and gardens come back to life. Schönbrunn Palace gardens begin to bloom, and walking through the Belvedere grounds feels completely different from winter.
You’ll experience:
- Fewer tourists than summer
- Increasingly mild weather
- Good conditions for sightseeing
May: One of the Best Months to Visit Vienna
If you’re choosing the best month to visit Vienna, May is hard to beat.
Average temperatures range comfortably, making it perfect for long walks, open-air cafés and sightseeing. It’s warm enough to enjoy being outside, but not yet too hot.
Festwochen, Vienna’s major festival in June, starts building momentum around this time. Cultural events and concerts fill the calendar.
For me, this is one of the great times to visit Vienna. The city feels alive but not overwhelming.

Summer in Vienna (June to August)
Summer in Vienna brings long evenings, open-air events and warm weather.
But it can also get surprisingly hot.
June: Festivals and Outdoor Living
June offers some of the best Vienna experiences:
- Open-air cinema
- Music festivals
- Festwochen festival
- Outdoor dining
Vienna’s weather in June is usually pleasant and warm, making it a great time to visit.
July and August: Heat and Holiday Season
July and August are the hottest months in Vienna.
What surprised me when I first moved to Austria was just how hot Vienna can get in summer. Compared to St. Pölten, where I live, Vienna often feels about five degrees warmer. With fewer green spaces in the centre, the heat lingers between buildings.
Average temperatures can climb into the high twenties or beyond. Heatwaves are not uncommon.
However, summer also offers:
- Swimming at Alte Donau lake
- Vineyard visits around Vienna
- Heuriger wine taverns
- Long daylight hours
If you love warm weather and outdoor activities, this may be the best time for you. But if you’re sensitive to heat, spring and autumn are more comfortable.
Autumn in Vienna (September to November)
Autumn is my other favourite season in Vienna.
September: A Perfect Balance
If I had to recommend one month in Vienna, September would be very close to the top.
The weather is still warm but no longer intense. Parks and gardens begin to turn golden, and vineyards around Vienna are at their most beautiful.
It’s an ideal time for:
- Sightseeing
- Walking tours
- Wine taverns
- Outdoor cafés
Hotel prices are generally more reasonable than in peak summer.
October and November: Fewer Crowds
Vienna’s weather in October is mild but cooler. By November, the city becomes greyer and quieter.
Vienna in November often means:
- Fewer tourists
- Lower hotel prices
- Foggy mornings
- Chilly temperatures
It may not be the most visually dramatic time to visit, but if you want to avoid the crowds, late autumn can be a smart choice.

Best Time to Visit Vienna for Specific Experiences
Best Time to Visit Vienna for Christmas Markets
Late November through December is the best time to visit Vienna’s Christmas markets.
Rathausplatz, Schönbrunn Palace and Belvedere host some of the most famous Christmas markets in Europe.
Cheapest Time to Visit Vienna
January and February are typically the cheapest times to visit Vienna.
Hotel prices drop after the Christmas and New Year’s period, and flights are often more affordable.
Best Time for Warm Weather
If you’re chasing warm weather, July and August are the hottest months.
However, May, June and September offer a more comfortable balance.
Best Time to Avoid the Crowds
Late autumn and winter (excluding December) have fewer tourists.
Spring and fall also offer a nice middle ground.
Best Time to Combine Vienna and Salzburg
If you’re planning to visit Vienna and Salzburg in one trip, May, June, or September are ideal.
The weather is good across Austria, and you can explore both cities comfortably.
So, When Is the Best Time to Visit Vienna?
Choosing the best time depends on what you value most.
If you love festive atmosphere and don’t mind crowds, December is magical.
In case you want lower prices and fewer tourists, January and February are surprisingly peaceful.
Or if you want warm weather and outdoor living, summer is lively but can be hot.
Personally, I think the best time to visit Vienna is spring or autumn. The colours are beautiful, the temperatures are comfortable, and the city feels balanced. You can sightsee without rushing, sit in cafés without freezing or overheating, and explore both the historic centre and green spaces comfortably.
But honestly, Vienna offers something in every season. It’s always worth a visit.
