I visited Hallstatt in January 2026 as a day trip. Even then, just after New Year’s Eve, it was still quite crowded. That alone tells you something: Hallstatt is popular year-round.

But when I saw the lake views with the mountains rising behind the pastel houses, I was genuinely speechless.

Once the day trippers leave, the UNESCO World Heritage town of Hallstatt becomes quieter, calmer and more magical. You can walk along the shore of Lake Hallstatt without weaving through crowds, and you’ll have better chances of catching those postcard views without hundreds of people in the frame.

Parking in Hallstatt is notoriously tricky. Spaces are limited and regulated. If you can, come by public transport. The train to Hallstatt station across the lake, followed by the ferry, is actually a lovely arrival experience.

I’ve walked from the train station to Hallstatt and then taken the ferry back. The ferry can get very full when a train arrives, but it’s quite large and most of the time everyone fits.

2. Lake Views Are Everything

Hotels with lake views in Hallstatt are highly sought after. If you want panoramic views of Lake Hallstatt and the surrounding mountains, book early.

3. It Is Always Crowded

No matter what time you visit, Hallstatt attracts visitors. January was still busy when I went. Shoulder season can help slightly, but don’t expect solitude.

If you want something traditional and charming, Seewirt Zauner is one of the best places to stay in Hallstatt.

This family-run hotel is located near the market square and offers that authentic Hallstatt feel. Some rooms have stunning lake views, and the restaurant is known for classic Austrian dishes.

It feels cosy and personal, rather than modern and corporate.

Because it’s smaller, availability can be limited, especially in peak season.

Fenix Hall

It doesn’t have the same historic charm as the Heritage Hotel, but it’s a solid choice for comfort and convenience.

Polreich

Polreich is a smaller, cosy accommodation option that offers a more intimate stay in Hallstatt.

It’s ideal if you want something simple and comfortable, with that authentic alpine village atmosphere. From here, you can easily explore Hallstatt and the surrounding area on foot.

It may not have grand panoramic views like some larger hotels, but it offers a pleasant and enjoyable stay.

Hotels with Lake Views in Hallstatt

When searching for the best Hallstatt hotels with lake views, pay attention to the room description.

“Lake view” can mean:

If that iconic photo moment matters to you, choose a hotel located directly along the lake and confirm the room type carefully.

Where to Stay Near Hallstatt: Obertraun

Obertraun is located just across Lake Hallstatt. It’s quieter, less crowded and often offers better prices.

Outside of the winter months, you can take the ferry between Hallstatt and the train station. Alternatively, you can walk around for 1.5 hours through a very scenic landscape. There is a short stretch along a main road, but most of the walk is peaceful and beautiful.

If you want to enjoy Hallstatt without staying in the busiest part of the village, Obertraun is a great base.

This option provides easy access to Hallstatt while giving you a calmer environment to return to at night.

It’s especially appealing if you’re travelling by train and want a simple, practical place to stay.

Landhaus Osborne

• A short ferry ride to Hallstatt

Best Time to Stay in Hallstatt

If you’re wondering about the best time to visit Hallstatt for a hotel stay:

Spring and autumn offer the most balanced experience. The colours are beautiful, and the temperatures are comfortable.

Summer brings warm weather and long days, but also the largest crowds.

Winter can be magical, especially around Christmas. The Hallstatt Christmas market has its own charm, but accommodation fills quickly.

If possible, avoid major holiday periods unless you’re booking far in advance.
